Dr. Clapham\, a consultant psychiatrist\, served on the medical committee of the forerunner organization of Cosgrove Care. Born and educated in Glasgow he qualified in medicine at the start of the Second World War and with a characteristic sense of duty volunteered for the army\, meeting the height requirement for the Medical Corps by a margin of a quarter of an inch. He served in West and North Africa\, then in Italy\, both as a doctor and psychiatrist\, treating psychiatric casualties at a forward treatment centre in the Italian campaign. He was not released from the army until a year after the war had ended in Europe. In civilian practice at Killearn Hospital he was heavily involved in the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen who had been affected by their wartime experience including Far Eastern PoWs. For the last twenty years of his life he was a general adult psychiatrist at the Southern General Hospital where his opinion and help were frequently sought by specialists in other areas of practice. His widow\, Edith\, died in 1991. \n“I shall be stiff and cold if I forget thee hearts of gold in the land where I shall mind younot is the land where all is forgot.” \n-Dee
